Why You Should Book an Airbnb Social Impact Experience on Your Next City Break
I have used Airbnb for accommodation countless times over the past few years in many cities across continents. I love staying in someone’s home and meeting locals via Airbnb. I feel it gives me a much more authentic stay and a greater understanding of the city. I was so excited when I heard Airbnb was launching Airbnb experiences as I love doing activities in new places. When I discovered that many of these Airbnb experiences are social impact ones and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the organization, I was so unbelievably excited! An Airbnb social impact experience makes it super easy and enjoyable to meet and positively impact the local community while experiencing a unique part of the city’s culture in a hands-on way.
In the past month, I have done 3 Airbnb social impact experiences. Two in South Africa and one in Japan:
All Artists Here
Cape Town, South Africa
Bongani’s three-day experience is around showcasing the amazing artists of South Africa! His non-profit organization, Maboneng Township Arts Experience, connects artists in the community and helps them “convert homes into galleries in order to spark economic empowerment.” Each day of the experience you have the chance to meet and speak with the different artists about their work and their stories. You gain a true understanding of how the two are linked. The talent and creativity observed is astounding!
Surf with Purpose
Cape Town, South Africa
On my experience with Apish, we went surfing in the amazing Muizenberg and then visited his township nearby. Apish’s organization, Waves for Change, “improves the health and well-being of young kids affected by abuse and violence” through surfing. It is amazing to see how much Waves with Change has grown and the impact surf therapy has! I had the BEST time surfing with Apish- he made it so fun and comfortable! Then, it was amazing to visit his township where the kids in the program come from and learn more about the culture.
My instructor Tenshin taught myself and 3 other students how to write Japanese characters in calligraphy. The proceeds from the class go to Tenshin’s organization, NPO LESA, which provides education resources to children in Vietnam whom have suffered from AIDS or are under a very difficult circumstance. Tenshin’s class was very informative, fun and engaging! He provided us with cookies, great conversation, information on his organization and even wrote our names and their meaning in Japanese!
How To Book an Airbnb Social Impact Experience
Each of these experiences has left a lasting memory and impression on me. I am grateful to have met each of my hosts, engage with part of the culture and give back during my travels.
These are just three of the many experiences offered throughout the globe! You can book an Airbnb social impact experience via their website or a tab on their app. When you are searching, ones that are social impact experience are noted as such and you can read about where they money goes and how it helps. It is amazing to see the company support the community in this way and the model makes it so simple for the host and the traveler!
It will be exciting to see where these experiences go as they grow!
